Sudbury Secondary hosts Literacy/Numeracy Evening for Grade 8 & 9 parents

Grade 8 and 9 parents/guardians are invited to Literacy Matters, Numeracy Counts – An EQAO Evening at Sudbury Secondary School on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at 7 pm.

"Sudbury Secondary School will bring parents/guardians together with staff to inform them about the EQAO Assessments (Education Quality and Accountability Office) and outline strategies which can be used at home," says Principal Paul Camillo. "This will provide additional support for student success by engaging parents in the process."

The session will focus on the why, who, when, where, and how of the Grade 9 assessment in Mathematics and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). "With the support of Board Co-ordinators, we will introduce parents/guardians to real world connections in math and literacy," says Camillo. "Students become that much more engaged when they can link what’s taught in the classroom to authentic experiences."

Literacy Matters, Numeracy Counts is being sponsored by the School Council at Sudbury Secondary School with funding from the Ministry of Education’s Parent Engagement Office. Sudbury Secondary is one of eight Rainbow schools to receive Parents Reaching Out Grants this year to support School Council initiatives to further engage parents/guardians in their child’s learning.

"Parents, as the first teachers in the home, are important partners in the learning process," says Jean Hanson, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. "Research has shown that the involvement of parents and guardians in their child’s education has a positive impact on student achievement and overall school performance."

The EQAO Evening will enhance communications between the school and the home and help to create a more welcoming environment for parents/guardians. The first 30 families who attend will receive Literacy and Numeracy Tool Kits to take home.
