Switched Up: Sudbury Secondary hosts Fight Against Cancer Gala on April 17th

Members of the Sudbury Secondary School Student Parliament are gearing up for this year’s “Fight Against Cancer Gala: Switched Up” set for Friday, April 17, 2026 at the Colonial Inn in Coniston. Doors open at 5 pm. All funds raised will support the Health Sciences North Foundation through Angels in Pink.

Sudbury Secondary School will host its fourth Fight Against Cancer Gala “Switched Up” on Friday, April 17, 2026 to raise funds for the Health Sciences North Foundation through Angels in Pink.

The gala – featuring a pizza buffet, salad bar, Wingo Bingo and a silent auction – will be held at the Colonial Inn located at 28 Cedar Street in Coniston.

Doors will open at 5 pm. Dinner will be served at 6 pm with entertainment presented by Sudbury Secondary School students, alumni and community members followed by music to dance the night away.

Sudbury Secondary School Principal Heather Downey commended the Student Parliament for their leadership in organizing the fundraising event since its inception.

“The organizing committee is composed of members of the student parliament as well as staff representatives and volunteers who are passionate about raising money for cancer research and treatment options,” she says. “Many of the members have had past encounters with cancer either with a loved one or themselves.”

Members of the student parliament have enjoyed this enriching experience. “Being a part of this year’s gala has been really special for me,” said student Avery Trudeau. “I’ve learned so much about cancer and the harm it’s placed on so many.”

“Cancer can happen to anyone,” said student Jade Neveu. “Many of us will be affected in our lifetime, either directly or indirectly. Supporting Angels in Pink will ensure that all funds raised through the gala stay local to help those in our community.”

Student parliament advisor and teacher Vicki Ashick-Faux was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago. The student parliament rallied behind her to launch the first “Fight Against Cancer” Gala in 2017. Since its inception, the event has raised over $5,000 for local cancer care.

“This gala brings us together in support of a cause that holds deep significance for our school and broader community” said Principal Heather Downey. “We invite everyone to stand with us and join in our fight against cancer.”

Tickets for the gala are $50 per person or $375 for a table of eight and are available at Sudbury Secondary School. To learn more, please contact the school at 705-674-7551 ext. 6809 or email [email protected].
