What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

Updated: Terry Fox Run: A new twist on a long-standing tradition in Rainbow Schools

Throughout September and October, students in Rainbow Schools are walking or running in support of The Terry Fox Foundation which marks its 40th anniversary this year.

Terry Fox Runs are held annually in communities across the nation to raise funds for cancer research and achieve Terry’s vision – a world without cancer.

Due to the pandemic, a number of Rainbow Schools will host alternative versions of the traditional event – a Terry Fox Run with a twist.

Thursday, October 1, 2020
Students will walk with their individual classes throughout the day.
Students were invited to take part in a “Toonie Toss” fundraiser leading up to the walk.

Alexander Public School
By September 30th, 2020, individual classes at Alexander completed 40 of “something” in honour of the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, including 40 laps around the school yard, 40 minutes of dancing, or 40 laps around the block.

Algonquin Road Public School

Assiginack Public School
Friday, October 9, 2020
Students in Grade 7/8 have organized an afternoon event based on cohorts.
In the afternoon, class cohorts will run around the perimeter of the schoolyard.
Students will wash and/or sanitize their hands before and after their scheduled run time.

C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd is proud to take part in the 40th Terry Fox Marathon of Hope on Thursday, October 1, 2020. Individual classes will complete various activities with a “What’s Your 40?” theme, including reading 40 books as a class or fundraising $40 per student. Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will host a Walking Marathon from October 5 to 9, 2020.
Throughout the week, students will walk 500 meters or more per day.
The total distance walked will be calculated as a school.

Cyril Varney Public School
Staff and students kicked off the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope with a virtual assembly. Individual classes were challenged to develop a “What’s Your 40?” activity which took place on Friday, September 25th. Activities included walking/running 40 laps around the school, taking 40 second exercise breaks throughout the day or doing 10 sets of 4 different exercises, finding various ways to create 40 in math, reading 40 books, and using 40 unique maple leafs to create a bulletin board display. Students collected online donations for the Terry Fox Foundation and took part in a school wide virtual read aloud of “Terry Fox and Me.”

Markstay Public School
Students from Markstay Public School ran during their gym periods on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School students will take part in a run on Thursday, October 1, 2020.
Students will start with a virtual schoolwide presentation at 2 pm, followed by an outdoor walk in classes. Kindergarten to Grade 2 students will run/walk around the main playground, Grades 3 to 5 classes around the soccer field, and Grades 6 to 8 around Mercer Road to ensure physical distancing. To mark the 40th anniversary, in cohorts/classes, students will walk 40 laps around the school:

Students at Queen Elizabeth II Public School walked for 30 minutes during their gym classes on Friday, September 25, 2020.

R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School students walked the school yard throughout the day in cohorts. Students are collecting online donations and took part in various tasks, including a schoolwide challenge.

Redwood Acres Public School
Leading up to Wednesday, September 30th, students at Redwood Acres Public School took part in the Terry Fox Foundation’s activities including 40 second dance breaks, 40 books read per class, and 40 words to describe Terry. These activities were organized by teachers Jaimie Fewster and Amanda Peterson.

S. Geiger Public School
In cohorts, students will run laps around the schoolyard on Thursday, October 1, 2020.
Kindergarten teacher Dianne Emiry will lead a schoolwide virtual assembly.
This year, families are encouraged to make donations online.

Valley View Public School
Students at Valley View Public School took part in physical education classes/cohorts between September 28th and 30th.
