The National Ballet of Canada hosts workshops in Rainbow Schools

The National Ballet of Canada will offer dance workshops and performances for several elementary schools in Rainbow District School Board as part of the Youth Outreach Understanding Program (YOU dance) from Tuesday, October 5 to Friday, October 8, 2010.

Launched in September 2007, YOU dance is a dynamic outreach initiative designed to introduce the richness of dance to students in Grades 4 to 6. Workshops, led by artist educators from The National Ballet of Canada, will introduce both students and classroom teachers to a unique learning experience focused on the use of movement, photos, costumes and props.

“Having YOU dance and its talented faculty offer these valuable workshops locally presents a tremendous opportunity for students and staff in Rainbow Schools,” said Ralph McIntosh, Arts Education Co-ordinator for Rainbow District School Board. “The arts play a vital role in a well-rounded education by reinforcing academic skills and encouraging creative and critical thinking,” he said. “Arts education is an essential component of intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth.”

Performances by apprentices from The National Ballet of Canada will take place at the Sudbury Secondary School Sheridan Auditorium at 12:30 pm from Tuesday, October 5 to Friday, October 8, 2010.  The one-hour matinées will be followed by a question and answer session.

A performance for the general public will take place on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 7 pm at the Sheridan Auditorium at Sudbury Secondary School. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Black Cat in Sudbury or at the door.

“Through this initiative, we hope to deepen the understanding of dance as an art form and as a means of physical, emotional and creative expression,” said Lisa Robinson, Artist Educator/Administrator for YOU dance.
