Two students from C.R. Judd Public School among top scientists

Two Grade 6 students from C.R. Judd Public School wowed the judges at the Sudbury Regional Science Fair held on April 12 and 13, 2014. Ayla Jones and Meredith Graham captured top honours for their multi-dimensional project on oil clean up, oil reclamation and bio-fuels.
“Natural Biodegradable Materials – The Future of Oil Spill Clean-up” earned the students a number of awards – First Place, Junior Division, Physical Sciences and the Milman Industries Inc. Award for the project that best demonstrates the importance or need for environmental consciousness as it relates to mining or other fields. Although unable to compete nationally due to their grade level, their project was worthy of an invitation to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.
“We are very proud of Ayla and Meredith for their outstanding achievement,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. “Our youngest scientists were among the best in the fair. Congratulations!”

Ayla and Meredith experimented with three types of bio-degradable sponges (cotton, wood chips and cattails) and found that cotton was the most absorbent and the best for recovering oil spills. They also determined that oil soaked wood chips provided the best bio-fuel. Their natural approach to environmental cleanup has tremendous potential, from broken pipelines to train derailments.

Rainbow District School Board congratulates all Sudbury Regional Science Fair winners.
