Valley View Public School was among 150 nation-wide recipients of a 150th “Happy Birthday Canada” Celebration Garden. A special planting ceremony took place at the school in Val Caron on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

Members of the local community, including Mayor Brian Bigger, Rainbow District School Board Trustee Judy Kosmerly, parents/guardians, grandparents and School Council members, joined staff and students to plant 1,000 red and white tulips in the school yard.

“When winter turns to spring, Valley View Public School will become a beacon for local and national pride,” said Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar. “Staff and students will be part of a moment in history that will bring them together with other Canadians and draw attention to this important celebration right here at home.”

Some 400 applications were submitted from organizations and communities across Canada for the 150th Birthday Celebration Garden Contest, spearheaded by the Canadian Garden Council.

“Many of our school-wide initiatives have made us an ideal candidate for a Celebration Garden,” said Valley View Public School Principal Chantal Lacroix. “We are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen.”

As part of the nation-wide celebration, a Flagship 150th Garden Promenade of 25,000 tulips will be planted adjacent to Niagara Falls, Canada’s most famous natural attraction.

“Our new tulip garden will connect us with communities all over the country,” said Principal Chantal Lacroix. “What a way to honour our home and native land for this milestone birthday celebration.”

She added: “On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to thank Darlene Melin, our Administrative Assistant, for taking the lead on this project as well as all sponsors for their generosity.”

Sponsors include The Canadian Garden Council, Vesey’s Bulbs, Canada Post, Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, Niagara Parks Commission, Garden Making magazine, Landscape Ontario, Ontario Garden Council, Baxter Travel Media, Enterprise Canada, Gardens BC, Québec Gardens’ Association and VIA Rail Canada.

The garden will be featured on the Canada’s Garden Route website at www.canadasgardenroute.ca.
