VOTE for Confederation Secondary School’s Aviva Community Fund application

Ready. Set. VOTE. That’s what Confederation Secondary School students and staff want you to do as they seek support for their Aviva Community Fund grant application. Confederation Secondary School has applied for $90,000 from the Aviva Community Fund to purchase equipment for its “Students in Media” program.

The application has two rounds – a voting round followed by a juried round. Voting is open until Friday, October 23, 2015 and the top 30 supported projects move on. You have 18 votes and 18 days to use them by logging on to Facebook or the Aviva Community Fund website.

The school’s application meets the Aviva Community Fund guidelines in a number of ways – promoting skills training and employment readiness that provides positive change and a pathway to a better future through education; promoting creativity; promoting culture; and helping technology discovery.

In the “Students in Media” program, students learn the technology and skills required for careers in film, broadcasting, audio production, computer science and art. “Over the past few years, Sudbury has enjoyed a boom in film production,” says Principal Pablo Gil-Alfau. “While this is great for Northeastern Ontario, most technical jobs are filled by professionals outside of Sudbury because students are not trained to meet the need.”

He adds: “One of our greatest priorities is to get high school students thinking about, exploring, and filling those jobs. By giving students the tools to excel in these fields, we are helping to create new industry leaders in Northeastern Ontario.”

Approximately 200 students participate in Confederation Secondary School’s media and arts programs each year. “Our students have worked on various media projects for community organizations and we hope to make an even greater contribution,” says Principal Gil-Alfau. “From figure skating showcases to graduation ceremonies, we are continuously providing high quality video to the non-profit sector.”

Confederation Secondary School offers a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Information and Communications Technology. The program enables students to gain sector specific skills and knowledge in engaging, career-related learning environments, and prepare in a focused way for graduation and postsecondary education, training or employment.
