Walk for Wellness: Algonquin Road students step up for mental health
Algonquin Road Public School is stepping up for mental health awareness with a community walk on Friday, May 10, 2019. Students in Grades 6 to 8 will Walk for Wellness with staff, families and members of the community to end the stigma associated with mental illness.
Members of the school’s Kindness Club organized the event in May to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month.
“Intermediate students naturally become important role models for our youngest students,” says Algonquin Road Public School Principal Trevor Dewit. “The hope is to empower them to become strong, supportive individuals who care about each other, especially in times of need.”
Participants will start the four kilometre walk from the school at 1:20 pm. They will make a short stop at the Royal Canadian Legion, whose members will serve refreshments. The walk will continue to Smith’s Market, where students will have a light snack before heading back to the school.
“This simple gesture demonstrates our commitment to a safe and inclusive environment for all,” says Principal Trevor Dewit. “I extend a special thank you to teacher Kelly O’Brien for spearheading this important initiative for our students and the broader community”.
He adds: “Join us in our fight to end the stigma.”
Algonquin Road Public School is located at 2650 Algonquin Road in Sudbury.
