What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

Work begins on restoring Lancer Dome

Work on restoring the Lancer Dome has begun. Rainbow District School Board received approval to proceed with the restoration plan from its insurance adjuster this week.

The dome was partially inflated yesterday to continue the process of carefully removing the snow and ice from the membrane. There is more snow and ice to remove and this work will continue. Representatives of the manufacturing company are on site to provide guidance.

The facility continues to be assessed to determine next steps to bring the structure back into operation. Early assessments indicate it will take at least two weeks and possibly longer before the facility is restored.

“We thank our students and community users for their patience as we complete any work that may be required inside and outside of the facility,” said Superintendent of Business Adam Guilbault.

He added: “Our goal is to re-open the dome as soon as possible. We are still assessing the situation and will update the timeline when we can.”

Community use of the dome has been suspended since the structure deflated following the unprecedented snowfall on March 15 and 16, 2026.

About the Lancer Dome

The Lancer Dome is the first multi-use sports facility of its kind in Greater Sudbury.

Located at Lasalle Secondary School, 1545 Kennedy Street, the dome gives the community access to covered artificial turf in all seasons.

The dome has three smaller soccer fields convertible to one large FIFA regulation soccer field.

During school days and after school, the Lancer Dome is used for athletic and academic programs in Rainbow Schools, as we promote healthy, active living for student achievement and well-being.

The dome is used by community groups during evenings, weekends and school holidays (except for statutory holidays.)

In addition to soccer, the dome provides an ideal space for cricket, flag football, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, slopitch and dryland training.
