Two students from Rainbow Schools will travel to Toronto this weekend to join young historians from Regional Heritage Fairs across Ontario at a special Sesquicentennial Ontario Provincial Heritage Fair at York University June 9 to 11, 2017.

Aiden Lippert-Murdoch, a Grade 6 student from Markstay Public School, and Kaija Grubber, a Grade 7 student in the Intermediate Program at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, captured top honours at the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair held on May 5, 2017.

Aiden Lippert-Murdoch’s first place project focused on “Escaping Slavery through the Underground Railroad: The Life of John Hall.” The project showcased the remarkable life of Aiden’s Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, John ‘Daddy’ Hall, and his escape from slavery in the United States and his settlement in Canada. Aiden Lippert-Murdoch won a Chromebook provided by Ontario Power Generation.

Kaija Grubber’s second place project was entitled “A Man’s World: The Life of Isobel Gunn”. The project told the story of Isobel Gunn, a Scottish woman who posed as a man in order to make the journey to Canada and find work as a fur trader for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

“We are very proud of Aiden and Kaija for their outstanding achievement,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “We wish them continued success as they showcase their projects at the provincial level.”

Through the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair, students in Rainbow Schools have the opportunity to bring the past to life. Students share stories of their families, their communities and their country, resulting in a creative display of local culture and Canadian heritage.
