What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

Young scientists from Rainbow Schools headed to Canada-Wide Science Fair

Three young scientists from Rainbow Schools will compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Regina, Saskatchewan from May 14 to 20, 2017. Their projects impressed the judges at the Sudbury Regional Science Fair, which earned them the honour of showcasing their findings among the best young scientists in the country.

Nethra Wickramasinghe, a Grade 8 student at MacLeod Public School, is participating in the Canada-Wide Science Fair for her second consecutive year. Last year, she built a filter to purify laundry water. This year, she looked at a way to preserve heat in homes with a thermopile. Her project is entitled Hot Air Insu-Layer.

Brendon Matusch, a Grade 9 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, created a neural network to sort apples and bananas based on ripeness. He compared the network’s performance to humans asked to do the same task. The project, Convolutional Neural Networks for Evaluation of Qualitative Characteristics in Quality Control, won Best in Fair at the Sudbury Regional Science Fair.

Megan Gran, a Grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, engineered a robotic system to assist individuals with physical disabilities with her project called Robotic Innovations Can Change Lives by Completing Common Tasks. The robot reduces the stress and discomfort of taking the garbage to the end of the driveway, making independent living easier.

“We are very proud of Nethra, Brendon and Megan for their outstanding achievement,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. “Our young scientists were among the best in the fair. We wish them continued success as they compete at the national level.”
