Assiginack Public School is a vibrant K to Grade 8 school located in the heart of Manitowaning – “The Village by the Bay.” We proudly serve families from the townships of Assiginack and Tehkummah.

Our name, rooted in Ojibwe tradition, means “Den of the Great Spirit.” This connection to place, community, and culture is an important part of who we are as a school.

About Our School

Our one-level school building is surrounded by a large outdoor play and recreation area that includes a soccer field, baseball diamond, Gaga Pit, basketball court, and play structure.

We are also developing an outdoor education space featuring raised garden beds, bird and bat houses, and native medicinal plants. This space will provide opportunities for students to learn through hands-on experiences connected to curriculum, nature, sustainability, and our local environment.

Our Programs

Evidence-Based Literacy
Literacy is a key focus at Assiginack Public School. We have introduced early reading screening in Kindergarten through Grade 2 and prioritize evidence-based, phonics-focused instruction across the primary grades.

Language and Culture
Students have opportunities to learn language and culture throughout their elementary experience:

• Kindergarten to Grade 3: Ojibwe language and culture through the arts
• Grades 4 to 8: Choice of Core French or Ojibwe as a second language

Colour-House Teams
Every student belongs to a multi-age colour house. Houses participate in school-wide events, activities, and challenges that build relationships, school spirit, leadership, and belonging.

Indigenous Education

At Assiginack Public School, we are committed to honouring Indigenous perspectives, language, and culture as an important part of school life.

Our Ojibwe language teacher provides dedicated language and cultural learning from Kindergarten to Grade 8. We work to create a school environment where Indigenous students and families feel welcomed, respected, and connected, while all students have opportunities to learn from Indigenous language, culture, perspectives, and knowledge.

Athletics and School Spirit

Assiginack Public School students have many opportunities to participate in athletics and physical activities, including:

• Badminton

Our teams participate in tournaments and events across Manitoulin Island and beyond. Athletics provide opportunities for students to develop skills, teamwork, perseverance, and pride in representing their school.

EcoSchools Commitment

Assiginack Public School is proud to be part of the EcoSchools Canada program. Students, staff, families, and community partners work together to promote environmental responsibility through school gardens, waste reduction, outdoor learning, and sustainability initiatives.

Family and Community Engagement

Our School Council is an active and valued part of the Assiginack Public School community, supporting student experiences and school improvement.

We believe that a strong school is connected to the community around it. Students, families, staff, and community partners come together throughout the year for activities and events such as:
