JUNIOR GIRLS TROUNCE LASALLE

This weekend our junior girls played our 1st game in the 'Knights Invitational Tournament' against Lasalle. We played very well, playing great defense and gathering many rebounds. At half time the score was 11 to 10 for Lasalle. We continued to defend our basket and at the end of the third quarter it was 14 to 12 for EHS. With only 1 more quarter to go we continued to frustrate our opponent and we managed to score 22 (yes 22) points in the 4th quarter alone and went on to defeat Lasalle 36 to 28. Taylor LeClair scored 18 points and was 50% from the foul line shooting 9 for 18. Our next game was against the Lo-Ellen Juniors who are undefeated in the Sudbury Division A this year. Again we came out strong and played very well. At the end of the 1st quarter the score was 10 to 8 for Lo-Ellen, at half time it was 15 to 14 for Lo-Ellen. The winner of this game was going to the championship final. At the end of the 3rd quarter it was 21 to 18 for Lo-Ellen. Our girls started to get a bit tired in the 4th quarter and we ended up losing 33 to 23. Our third and final game was against the Lo-Ellen midgets. Our girls easily defeated this midget team 42 to 22. 11 girls played in the tournament and only 3 of our girls are actually junior age, so to beat the Lo-Ellen midgets by 20 points was a great success. JUNIOR GIRLS' BASKETBALL BATTLE HARD

This week our Junior girls’ basketball team played Blind River on Tuesday and Elliot Lake on Thursday. On Tuesday against Blind River we found ourselves down by 11 points at half time after playing a physical first half. Our girls came out strong in the 3rd quarter and managed to shorten their lead to only 1 point. In the fourth quarter our girls played very hard and we managed to beat Blind River 35 to 29. On Thursday we travelled to Elliot Lake for our first game against the Atoms this season. Our girls struggled to find the basket in the first half and we found ourselves once again down by a few baskets starting the third quarter. We played better in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but it was too little too late and we could not pull out the win. Updated October 16, 2009 [top]

CANADIAN RECORD BELONGS TO EHRHARDT!!

What a day it was today. Espanola High School’s most successful day at OFSAA Track and Field in history ! Caroline Ehrhardt of Espanola High School has jumped farther than any other girl in Canadian high school competition. Ever!!! Her fourth round jump of 12.76m beat the Canadian Interscholastic Record set by Olympian Tabiah Charles by 40 cms. That also means that Caroline has qualified to compete at this years World Youth Track and Field Championships in Italy during the first weekend in July! Her first three jumps were a bit shaky. She faulted on her first jump, had a second jump of 11.89 (good enough to get her into the final round of three jumps) and a third round jump of 11.54m. They whittled the field down from 24 of the best jumpers in Ontario to 8 and Caroline was in second place as the leader had a jump of 12.08m down. However, we knew that Caroline was ready to put on a performance for the crowd and she had full crowd support. People started clapping i n rhythm as she stood on the runway ready to start her jump and when she landed it she was well past the little Canadian flag and the OFSAA sign that marked where the old records stood. The crowd went wild (there were some tears of joy and pride shed as well. Truth be told.) Her fifth round jump was even further.....alas the red flag went up signalling a fault (much disputed by a biased crowd - me included, except I’m not biased - it clearly wasn’t a fault). Anyways she jumped 12.56 on her final jump and eventually ended up on the top step of the podium. Caroline’s is the ONLY Canadian Interscholastic Record set at the meet so far. To set a record like that takes such skill, effort, determination, poise and ....you get the idea, it’s hard to put it into words the level at which she is operating. Needless to say, it capped off a tremendous day.

I certainly do not want to leave out the spectacular performance of Karen Dubreuil. She entered the competition with a best long jump of 4.70m in Junior Girls. And then on her first jump, jumped 4.90m putting her in third place after the first round. And she continued to jump farther. Karen qualified for the final round of three jumps in 5th place. Her best jump was 4.93 m. However, on her last jump she pulled a 4.99m out of her hat and that moved her up to fourth place in the province of Ontario for Junior Girls Long Jump. An incredible achievement for someone who just decided to come out at the last minute. Many congratulations to Mr. Bertrand here and the work he has done with her to get her ready for this event!

Sadly the day didn’t go so well for Matt Brown who bowed out of the Midget Boys high jump after clearing one height. He was well below his personal best, but he gave it his best and he made it to Ontario’s biggest stage, so we’re all proud of him for making it here. Updated June 8th, 2009 [top]
